This work started out as scrap on the floor as part of my first realization that I could use the Flexseal liquid rubber as a medium itself. You have to understand that painting with the stuff was never my first intention. I had an idea of making rubber plates, and from those rubber plates, I’d make monoprints. Of course, it was inevitable that I would try painting with it too.
What draws me to this image now is that it reminds me of my mother’s last journey home. But again, as with the others that seemed to predict a future, it is only a fragmented and honest snapshot of feelings, sights, and sounds of another world visited in one’s heart. So to that end, I don’t want this to be thought of as a dark piece. It isn’t meant to be.
In fact, it represents liberation by its existence, even if the meaning behind it is a mystery to even me.
